This is journey level inspection work in securing and maintaining compliance with gas and mechanical construction codes. Work involves the inspection of a variety of heating, air conditioning, ventilation, duct work and gas installations to determine if plans, workmanship, and materials comply with related codes and ordinances. Work is performed with independence in the field, however, a supervisor is available for assistance when necessary. Work is reviewed for adherence to policies and procedures, accuracy and completeness. Reviews building plans for compliance with pertinent regulations; advises contractors, engineers, builders and the general public in designing or relocating gas, heating and air conditioning installations in proposed new construction or in existing buildings. and in making corrections to ensure conformity with regulations and plans relating to building regulations; secures compliance with codes. Conducts on site inspections of gas, heating and air conditioning installations on residential, commercial, and industrial buildings in the course of construction, alteration, and repair and on completion to assure compliance with codes and ordinances; conducts rough inspections prior to concealment of piping, vents, and duct work; checks duct work, combustion, air ventilation, and proper clearance between appliances; makes intermediate inspections after all vents, piping, and equipment has been installed; tests for proper installation including size, duct work, and gauge of metal; inspects new or repaired gas installations, or where there has been a replacement of existing gas appliances, piping, and related equipment. Authorizes gas meter settings; makes final inspections after all gas equipment is operational, and issues certificate of approval to contractor. Reviews plans for proposed small commercial, residential, and apartment structures prior to issuance of permits. Assists and advises utility company and advises and assists Fire Department in determining cause of fire as needed including on call. Investigates defective installation complaints; enforces defect correction; interprets regulations to the public; appears in court to support investigation findings. Issues stop work notice for unauthorized work or work that is substandard, unsafe or in violation of the code. Attends meetings; keeps records and prepares periodic inspection reports. Requires regular and prompt attendance plus the ability to work well with others and work well as a team.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
Work exposes the employee to hazards of construction sites including dangers of moving heavy equipment, inclement weather conditions, and high noise levels. Work requires regular physical activities such as walking, crawling, standing, stooping, bending, and operation of a motor vehicle.
