Job Summary The Samuel Ginn College of Engineering’s vision is to provide the best student-centered engineering experience in the nation and become a Top 20 engineering institution. Currently, ranked 31st among public engineering institutions, Auburn Engineering expands scientific and engineering knowledge through innovative research and creative partnerships involving academia, industry and government.
Auburn University’s Office of Development is currently conducting a search for a Sr. Major Gifts Officer who can effectively work with alumni, donors, corporations, foundations, colleagues, faculty, administrators, volunteer leaders and other constituents to secure support and private funding for the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. This position is responsible for raising principal gifts ($1 million and greater) to enable the unit to fulfill its mission and implement its programs and initiatives. This position is also responsible for providing strategy, leadership, direction, coordination and management of all levels of giving.
The ideal candidate is a collaborative, motivated, energetic professional with strong listening and multi-tasking skills and sound judgment who can perform the role of a principal gift fundraiser for the College.
Essential functions include:
- Collaborates with the Dean and Sr. Director of Development to design and implement fundraising strategies to meet the college’s annual and long term needs.
- Identifies, cultivates and solicits major gift prospects for gifts of $1 million or more to reach individual and unit goals. Completes between 125-175 significant face-to-face visits annually with focus on advancing prospects to close gifts. Presents 10-20 solicitations annually to meet individual goals and goals of the college. Effectively works with donors to facilitate gifts.
- Provides leadership and/or mentoring to the constituent unit. Creates and fosters an environment conducive to high performance and a cohesive team. Sets a positive example through actions. Monitors monthly gift and pledge totals. Collaborates with staff to strategize on solicitation and closing gifts. Coaches employees to improve performance and provides effective guidance and feedback to employees. Creates a learning environment. Involves others and delegates appropriately, while dealing effectively with others in conflict situations. Conducts annual performance plans and evaluations with staff, as assigned.
- Attends events as a representative of the constituency as necessary to provide cultivation for probable donors and stewardship of donors.
- Provides stewardship to include acknowledging donors, showing gratitude, demonstrating impact, and participating/attending events and functions.
- Participates in college, central development and professional development meetings and activities. Regularly attends staff meetings, development forums, team meetings, and other meetings as directed by AVP or by the Dean/Sr. Director. Attends training provided or recommended by the Central Development Office, AVP, Sr. Director and/or Human Resources.
- Updates and informs Sr. Director of Development and other staff of goal status and pipeline plans and proposals. Ensures that a cooperative team effort is made to meet goals and objectives.
- Manages budget with input provided by Sr. Director. Reviews and approves financial records, vouchers and acquisitions.
- Develops reports, records, and programs, and analyzes information necessary to plan and complete projects and assignments.
Minimum Qualifications Entry into the applicant pool requires the following minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- Minimum of seven years of major gift fundraising experience, with at least two years in a higher education setting
- Experience raising major and principal gifts within a large capital campaign ($1 billion+)
- Demonstrated record of successful major gift solicitations and experience planning and executing donor identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies
- Superior interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
- Desire and ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team-based environment
- Ability to speak and present with credibility
- Ability to work in a system that emphasizes measurable objectives, which include targets for fundraising goals
- Able and willing to work some weekends, evenings, and to travel extensively
- Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to selection

Desired Qualifications Desired Qualifications:
- Experience in both higher education fundraising and private sector sales, customer service, account management or marketing
- Experience managing, mentoring or training fundraising or sales staff
- Successful track record of major or principal gift fundraising in a higher education environment
- Successful track record of collaborative fundraising in partnership with multiple constituencies
- Proficient with the use of the Ellucian Advance database or a similar CRM system
