The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Housing Assistant for the Coastal Alabama Area Command located in Mobile, Alabama. The Housing Assistant accepts, and processes residents staying in the Family Haven Shelter and completes assigned documentation for intake and discharge of residents. Monitors the activity of residents on an assigned shift ensuring safety, security and compliance to house rules. Transports residents as needed. Issues linen and supplies to new residents; monitors cameras and makes periodic rounds of entire facility; records any unique situations occurring on assigned shift. Assigns housekeeping and other tasks to residents; Answers telephone and responds to questions regarding the lodge/shelter operations. Warms pre-cooked meals and serves residents; Participates in regular staff meetings and trainings as required. Cleans and sanitizes each room at time of resident discharge; ensures that all rooms are in proper order before arrival of residents.
Pay Rate: $8.00 Per hour
Work Schedule: Schedule discussed during the interview. Will work Monday through Friday, 24 hours per week.
Job Duties: (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
Knowledge of general office procedures and practices. Knowledge of safety precautions associated with transporting passengers. Knowledge of cleaning practices, methods, and techniques. Ability to assist in the preparation and presentation of meals. Ability to communicate effectively with residents to control, lead, and motivate behavior. Ability to work with the public encompassing all types of behaviors. Ability to work independently and with limited supervision while enforcing established policies and procedures. Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language. Ability to respond to emergency situations quickly and calmly while maintaining control and initiating the proper corrective action.
Job Requirements: (Education and Experience)
High school diploma or G.E.D. and one-year experience performing security or social service work preferred. Requires a valid, current State Driver’s License and two years’ experience operating an automotive vehicle or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Licenses and Certifications:
Requires a First Aid and C.P.R. Certification. Requires a background check and drug screen.
Work is performed in a lodge/shelter facility where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like. Work is performed in a normal kitchen environment where there may be limited physical discomforts associated with working around hot stoves/ovens or cold freezers. Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) 5-10% of work time.
