Job Description

This is public safety work in the protection of life and property by patrolling to insure enforcement of laws and ordinances, and assisting the Fire Department in fighting fires and providing other emergency services. An employee in this class is responsible for routine patrol, preliminary investigations, traffic control and some firefighting duties in a designated area on an assigned shift. A Public Safety Officer’s duties may involve a work hazard of personal danger and employees must be able to act without immediate supervision and exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies. Work is performed in accordance with established guidelines and procedures under the general supervision of a Public Safety Sergeant or other superior.
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.)

Patrols the city or a designated area in a radio equipped car to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover fires, to prevent commission of crime, to direct traffic and to enforce motor vehicle operation and parking regulations.

Investigates a variety of suspicious activities and circumstances.

Makes arrests as required.

Preserves good public relations.

Enforces traffic laws through observation, use of radar, traffic checkpoints, and DUI suspicion stops.

Collects and preserves evidence of crimes.

Investigates traffic accidents and fills out accident reports.

Answers calls and complaints involving fires, automobile accidents, robberies, neighborhood disturbances, and other misdemeanors and felonies.

Testifies as a witness in court in connection with arrests and citations made.

Makes preliminary and follow-up investigations on burglaries, larceny, dog bites and any other offenses where investigations are necessary.

Administers first aid at the scene of emergencies.

Attends training courses in law enforcement, firefighting, and prevention.

Fingerprints arrested persons and photographs them.

Maintains jail and prisoners.

Transports prisoners.

Receives emergency and non-emergency calls and dispatches personnel as appropriate.

At fire scenes, lays and connects hose, holds nozzle, and directs water stream.

Raises and climbs ladders and uses chemical fire extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines, and other equipment.

Drives fire apparatus as needed.

Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of the firefighting equipment such as hanging and drying hoses.

Performs related work as required.
