Purpose: Provide safe, reliable, on time transportation for children enrolled in program as outlined in the ECMHSP Transportation Manual.

Meet all current ECMHSP, state and local child care employee regulations; including First Aid and CPR. Department of Transportation (DOT) yearly physical examination (as required by ECMHSP, local county or state). Complete pre-employment drug screening; comply with random drug/alcohol testing defined in CFR 49 accordance; knowledge of Federal, State transportation regulations and requirements. Bilingual: English-Spanish desired.

Accepted: Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (class A or B), with P & S endorsement and School Bus Driver Certificate of Training.

Skills, Knowledge and Ability: Good communication skills; ability to read written and electronic information efficiently. Basic computer skills (Microsoft applications: Word, Excel and Outlook). Able to organize, file and distribute information and work under stressful conditions with multiple deadlines. Bilingual: English-Spanish desired.

Working Conditions: Head Start center transportation environment; driving a bus to transport young children; flexible work hours occasional (evening/ weekend/overtime), sitting for a minimum of two hours. Work with cleaning products such as bleach and disinfectants.

Physical Requirements: Physically able to perform tasks, including but not limited to, bending, lifting and moving a minimum of 25 pounds.


Implementation of Transportation services:

  • Follow established bus routes without deviations except when directed to do so by an Emergency Response Team, Lead Bus Driver, Transportation Specialist in coordination with Transportation Manager/ Assistant Transportation Manager.
  • Ensure implementation of handling and disposal of blood and other bodily fluid incidents
  • Provide timely transportation to assigned children in a safe, reliable and climate controlled environment.
  • Assume responsibility for proper care and maintenance of bus according to established Federal, State, and Head Start and ECMHSP regulations.
  • Keep the bus neat, clean and sanitized according to established procedures outlined in the ECMHSP Transportation Manual.
  • Ensure that medications and breast milk are secured and transported to and from center and parents in accordance with ECMHSP established guidelines. Deliver medication to Health/Disabilities Services Coordination (HDSC) office at the end of each route ensuring that medication is received by authorized staff.
  • Ensure the safe and proper transportation of breast milk according to ECMHSP procedures established in the Transportation Manual.
  • Maintain updated emergency contact information on all passengers on bus.
  • Assume responsibility for the safety of all occupants riding the bus.
  • Perform pre/post trip inspection and preventative maintenance in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, CFR 45-49, State laws and ECMHSP policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that an operational emergency communication system is available on the bus.
  • Ensure that emergency supplies identified in the Health Services Manual are on bus at all times.
  • Ensure Child restraint systems, wheelchairs and other equipment for children with disabilities are properly installed and secured in compliance with DOT and FMVSS standards.
  • Ensure a properly signed fixed bus route is on the bus prior to running it.
  • Contribute relevant information to the Community Assessment process.
  • During evacuations or drills, assume role as indicated in established procedures.

  • Transport parents when requested and approved by Transportation Manager/Assistant Transportation Manager/Transportation Specialist.
  • Transport children to field trips when requested by Transportation Manager/Assistant Transportation Manager/Transportation Specialist.
  • Participate in State to State vehicle moves as required.


  • Ensure delivery of all communication to and from parents and center on a daily basis.
  • Maintain a professional attitude with open communication and support a positive environment in the center an on the bus to promote the social, emotional and mental wellness of staff, children and families.
  • Maintain on-going communication with the Lead Bus Driver.
  • Attend and participate in all required meetings, including Transportation meetings and other staff meetings as requested by supervisor.
  • Maintain positive communication and an attitude of respect with children and their families, staff members and community representatives.

  • Participate in center and transportation annual assessment, as requested by supervisor

Professional Development:

  • Attend training according to Professional Development Plan.
  • Attend and participate in all pre-service, in-service training and other trainings as requested by supervisor.


  • Monitor the bus daily for safety and maintenance (interior/exterior) before transporting children.
  • Follow ECMHSP Transportation Procedures; conduct Pre-Trip and Post-Trip Inspections, complete report and submit to supervisor.
  • When last child is escorted off the bus, ensure that Center/Bus Caregiver perform post route inspection rear to front of bus, including under seats to ensure to that no child is left on the bus.

  • Conduct, at end of bus route, an inspection front to rear, including under the seats, to ensure that no child is left on the bus.
  • Conduct a monthly evacuation drill for each approved bus route, following procedures established in the ECMHSP Transportation Manual.

Record-Keeping and Reporting:

  • Report immediately to Lead Bus Driver, any situation that is detrimental to the health and safety of children, staff and families.
  • Report immediately to Lead Bus Driver and Assistant Transportation Manager/Transportation Specialist, any suspected maintenance or repair problems.
  • Report immediately to Lead Bus Driver and Assistant Transportation Manager/Transportation Specialist, any traffic violation or accident and submit an ECMHSP Accident/Incident Report.
  • Complete Seating Chart portion of the Transportation Attendance/Seating Chart Form.
  • Ensure that Center/Bus Caregivers are completing the Transportation Attendance/Seating Chart Form on a per route basis daily as indicated in the instructions.

  • Complete all paperwork as defined in the Transportation Manual.


  • Provide functional supervision, guidance and direction to Center/Bus Caregivers while riding bus.

  • Provide the Lead Bus with feedback on job performance of Center/Bus Caregivers.
