As an Electro-Discharge Machining (EDM) Technician the selected candidate will perform EDM and other machining support to support the X-ray telescope manufacturing team within the Optics and Imaging Branch at NASA MSFC.
Emphasis will be on manufacturing of components for the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) mission.
Manufacturing mechanical components for precision optics
Machining supporting hardware utilizing either CNC or manual machining methods
Reviewing mechanical drawings to ensure manufacturability
Identifying and implementing corrections to potential job safety hazards
Operating overhead bridge hoists to move and assemble hardware
Typically, educational requirement is a HS diploma or GED or equivalent; at least 6 years of experience and continuing education, or an Associate’s Degree or Equivalent and at least 2 years of related experience.
- CNC experience, especially in electro-discharge machining (EDM)
- Experience in manual machining such as lathes, mills, presses, etc.
- Ability to fully read and understand mechanical drawings
- Ability to complete required personnel safety training and certifications
- An extremely strong safety attitude and commitment to safety
- Excellent attention to detail, communication, and interaction skills
- Computer acumen with MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint
- Ability to use Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM)
- Mechanical design, especially in Solid Works or a related product
Optical fabrication area (90%), and general office environment (10%). Office and laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).
Requires standing, sitting, and walking in a laboratory environment with hazards that may require wearing safety glasses, safety shoes, lab coats, face shields, hard hats, and gloves. Work will be performed on-site at NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center.
Equipment and Machines
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
