Job Description

Performs routine manual labor which does not require a high degree of skill; may also drive trucks and light tractors in a training status. In most cases, works under immediate direction of supervisor or equipment operator. Construction or carpentry experience desired for assignment to bridge construction crew.
A: Manual Labor
1. Operates chainsaw to cut trees from right-of-way
2. Uses axe, bush axe, banjo blade to clear brush
3. Loads and unloads trucks and cars of dirt, construction materials and supplies
4. Shovels asphalt, cinders, rocks, dirt and other materials
5. Installs and cleans drainpipes
6. Patches potholes
7. Picks up and piles brush, refuse and other materials
8. Directs traffic at job sites
9. Performs related manual labor as required
10. Tie rebar
11. Construction of concrete forms
12. Disassembly of concrete forms
13. Assist in placing concrete forms
B: Equipment Operation and Maintenance
1. May perform operator maintenance on trucks and light tractors
2. May drive dump truck, tractor drawing large mower or implement in training status.
3. May drive pickups on light hauls
4. May run steel wheel roller, load asphalt
5. May operate brook to sweep excess materials off roadway
6. May operate loader
7. May check fluid level in equipment prior to operation. Notified supervisor of needed
mechanical repairs.
8. May assist mechanic with field repairs
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Basic skills in the operation, maintenance and safe use of trucks and light tractors
2. Knowledge of traffic regulations
3. Knowledge of county policies, procedures and rules
4. Strength to lift 100 pounds
5. Physical dexterity sufficient to operate levers, gears, etc.
Other Characteristics
1. Willing to work overtime and weekends in emergencies
2. Willing to comply with the following dress standards, clean, neat attire with appropriate foot
and hand gear
3. Any combination of education and experience which meets the necessary qualifications
listed above.
4. Possess a current Alabama Driver’s License
