People who are interested in applying for a job with the Census are strongly advised to apply online at:* The pay rate for Enumerators/census takers in this area is $_15.00 per hour. Work related mileage is reimbursed at the rate of $.58 per mile currently. Staff is paid weekly. Jobs are temporary, and they involve fieldwork near their home, and will normally last several weeks to a few months. Approximately, 300 people in Tuscaloosa County will be hired in the next few weeks. Not everyone who is qualified is hired; applicants who are selected are called when jobs are available. Work schedules are flexible. Many census takers have other fulltime or part-time jobs. Generally, you will have the flexibility to choose which hours to work during productive time periods. If you are considered eligible for hire, your application will remain active throughout the census. Basic qualifications for census jobs are as follows: must be a United States citizen; must be 18 years old or older; must have a valid Social Security Number; must have a valid email address; must answer assessment questions; male applicants born after December 31,1959, must be registered with the Selective Service System; must pass a Census Bureau performed criminal background check and review of criminal records (including fingerprinting) as part of the hiring process; must not engage in any partisan political activity while on duty; current employment will be reviewed on a case by case basis for compatibility with Census Bureau employment.
