This is general duty police work, serving legal processes, maintaining order and providing for the care and security of prisoners at the Mobile County Metro Jail.
An employee in this class performs patrol work, conducts criminal investigations, receives, processes and transports prisoners, protects their well-being and arranges for them to perform work details, works as identification officer, and/or serves legal processes. An incumbent in this position may be assigned to special sections within the department. Work is performed in accordance with established guidelines and procedures under the general direction of a Sheriff’s Sergeant or other superior. Supervision may be exercised over other employees as assigned.

Enforces the laws of the County and all other pertinent local, state and federal laws.
Patrols an assigned area in motorized police equipment.
Checks doors and windows and examines premises of unoccupied buildings or residences in order to detect any suspicious conditions.
Investigates suspicious conditions and complaints and makes arrests of persons who violate laws.
Accompanies prisoners and mental patients to headquarters, jail or court and appears in court as arresting officer.
Makes traffic arrests and gives violation tickets to those who break traffic laws.
Aids motorists, attends fires, accidents and disorders in assigned area as directed, restores order, renders all possible assistance, regulates traffic and prepares necessary reports.
Watches for stolen cars and wanted or missing persons. Operates radio patrol car or patrol wagon as required. Makes investigations of traffic accidents. Conducts investigations of serious crimes, preserves the scene of the crime, interviews victims, witnesses and suspects.
Follows up on leads and presents cases to County Attorney’s Office.
Investigates felonies and misdemeanors and takes necessary corrective action.
Conducts investigations of accidental deaths or homicides, including traffic, hunting, drowning and suicide.Maintains records and prepares reports. Investigates and makes arrests on narcotics violators.Prepares and obtains search warrants. Investigates and makes arrests on vice violations. Serves as guard and escorts prisoners and mental patients to and from court, hospitals and doctor’s offices. Exercises immediate supervision over inmates in cells and in dining room. Assigns prisoners to work detail. Makes periodic inspections of cells and holding areas to prevent injury to persons and property. Makes verbal and written reports to superior officer as required. Receives and books prisoners at the Metro Jail, makes record of clothes, and searches prisoners and any personal effects. Answers phones. Accepts packages for prisoners after inspection. Maintains jail security. Serves warrants, subpoenas and legal papers and other legal process papers. Takes fingerprints and photographs.
Classifies fingerprint cards. Files and compares cards. Develops fingerprints with powder and chemicals. Makes entries into records. Types index cards, fingerprint cards, correspondence and reports. Enforces court orders. Collects Sheriff’s fees and conducts sales as directed.
Develops crime prevention programs in the community and schools. Performs related work as required.
