Optics Engineer

Your role:
In your role as an Optics Engineer you will directly apply your subject matter expertise in support of Redstone Test Center’s (RTC) testing activities of numerous Department of Defense (DoD) weapon platforms and systems. Support will include design of instrumentation, development of state-of-the-art optical and/or electro-optical test and evaluation techniques, data analysis, and technical guidance on a variety of projects and advances in the field.

What you’ll do all day:
Design of optical and/or electro-optical instrumentation.
Oversee the technical execution of advanced sensor systems and subsystems testing in a realistic environment conditions.
Development of advanced optical and/or electro-optical test and evaluation techniques.
Perform data analysis, providing conclusions and recommendations which directly affect production, quality, and reliability of weapon systems and subsystems.
Conduct failure analysis in areas of advanced sensor systems and subsystems.
Determine the performance, capabilities, limitations, and problems associated with optical and electro-optical sensors, new and emerging optical, laser, SAR, acoustic, hyperspectral, and infrared technology systems.
Development of requirements, procedures, and unique test methods for new and emerging sensor technologies.
Design and demonstrate the effectiveness of advanced test instrumentation systems and facilities; involving the integration of optical, electro-optical, electronic, mechanical, and computer subsystems with models, simulations, and synthetic test environments in order to achieve specified mission goals.
Provide technical direction to engineers and technicians in the development of unique test equipment and instrumentation.
Advise on and/or responsible for several major instrumentation design and development programs.

Minimum requirements for this position:
Master’s Degree in an applicable field from an ABET accredited university.
Strong working knowledge of lasers, ultraviolet sensors, and radio-frequency sensors.
Expert knowledge of optical/electro-optical theory, state-of-the-art test equipment, test techniques, underlying physical properties, verification and validation procedures for optical and electro-optical sensors, and new and emerging optical, hyperspectral, and infrared technologies.
Demonstrated knowledge of several engineering and scientific disciplines including: optical/electro-optical systems, visible, ultraviolet, infrared, and hyperspectral technology and phenomenology, sensor effects, atmospheric effects.
Experience with modeling and simulation methodologies to the design and development of electronic and optical equipment and instrumentation.
Be a U.S. Citizen and must possess, or be able to obtain and maintain, a Secret Security Clearance.
Demonstrated capability to communicate technical information both orally and in written form.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Desired skills and experience for this position:
Active Secret Security Clearance preferred.
Applicable experience supporting DoD development or testing of weapon systems and/or subsystems.
PhD in an applicable field from an ABET accredited university.
