This is graduate engineering work as an Engineer Intern in the investigation, design and construction of public works and engineering projects.
An employee in this class is responsible for the application of professional engineering skills to a wide variety of public works planning and design projects. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures using judgment and initiative in developing work methods under the general direction of a professional engineering supervisor. Supervision may be exercised over sub-professional engineering technicians and clerical staff.
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Designs and prepares construction plans and drawings, plats, specifications, bid proposals and quantity lists for engineering projects; reviews standards, specifications, ordinance requirements and regulations applied by the City or County and researches latest developments to determine changes to be made and probable impact; reviews plans, specifications and contract documents for quality assurance purposes; controls payments and measurements in all contracts; coordinates adjacent design and construction projects; computes traverses, property boundaries, curve data, excavation and embankment quantities and grade sheets using recorded deeds, plats and field survey notes; writes boundary, easement, and right-of-way legal descriptions; collects accurate as-built field measurements and prepares payment statements and computations for construction contracts; provides direction and supervision of subordinate staff; reviews plans for compliance with engineering specifications; corresponds with applicants and conducts site visits; coordinates the locating of storm water infiltration and inflow to the sanitary sewer system; facilitates the acquisition of rights-of-way; manages capital improvements from pre-design through construction; conducts traffic studies and implements corrective measures as appropriate; inspects construction projects for compliance with specifications and standards; answers inquiries regarding projects and other engineering matters; computes material, labor, equipment cost estimates for budgetary and contract purposes; administers the operations of assigned divisions; performs related work as required.
