Job Description

The Registered Magnetic Resonance Technologist is responsible for technical aspects of magnetic resonance imaging. Performs examination of areas requested. Available for emergency on-call procedures.

The position requires a high school diploma plus education at the college level which leads to certification or registry.

Position requires 1-3 years experience.

Complexity of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Job activities are fairly complex and highly diversified but are structured within a predefined work routine.
  • Involves the exercise of judgment in the analysis of facts or conditions regarding patient care or hospital problems to determine what action should be taken within the specifications of standard practice.

Supervisory Accountability

  • Leads or guides the work of a group of employees. May periodically conduct employee orientation. Answers questions on pre-described procedures for the group. Does not make hire/fire decisions.


  • Works with some confidential patient data or other confidential information where the effect of disclosure would probably be negligible.

Interpersonal contacts

  • The position has frequent communication with middle level management and professional employees. Communication involves fairly complex information of largely routine matters.

Essential Job Function

  • Maintains working knowledge of all MRI Procedures.
  • Operates sophisticated computerized equipment to obtain anatomical examinations.
  • Responsible for overall operation and function of equipment associated with MRI.
  • Responsible for orderly and mannerly schedule of patients.
  • Supervises subordinates.
  • Maintains continuing education to keep current with advances in technology and procedures
    as they are developed.
  • Maintains adequate supplies.
  • Authorizes charges for procedures to be applied to patient accounts.
  • Cross trains to perform in other areas as needed.
  • Completes yearly clinical competency assessments.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Attends all mandatory hospital inservices.
  • Recognizes the need for control/assessment of pain for patients and helps to prevent or
    reduce patient pain levels when possible.
  • Responsible for reporting occurrences of medical/healthcare errors and actions taken to
    improve patient safety, both in response to actual occurrences and proactive findings, as
    outlined in the patient safety plan.
  • Gives patient care with consideration to cultural diversity , ages of the patient population
    served and physical and mental ability of the patient population.

Unit/position specific job functions

  • Maintains current BCLS certification.
  • Maintains continuing education to keep current with advances in technology and procedures
    as they are developed.
  • Will work additional hours/shifts in situations of high census, adverse weather conditions and
    other employee absences or vacancies as requested.
  • Will take call as required.
  • Performs other related duties as requested by supervisor.
  • Prepares and administers contrast agents as necessary.
  • Prepares reports, surveys, and documents as necessary.
